- Map is skeletal because the taxon has generally not been distinguished from Carex frankii in past Virginia studies. FNA treats this as a species separate from C. frankii but the name has not been used in recent years and its distribution in Virginia remains unclear until specimens can be examined. It may never have been very common in the state, as its main range is concentrated to the south and west, and the few Virginia records represent the species' northeastern limit.
Carex aureolensis can be recognized by its rhizomatous, colonial habit and pistillate spikes that are more slender than those of C. frankii. - Habitat
- Mapped for Virginia by Ford and Reznicek (2002) but habitats are not fully known. Preliminary indications are that it grows in bottomland forests, damp to wet clearings, and other other disturbed wetlands.
