- Comments
- One of Virginia's rarest plant species, Streptopus amplexifolius has an interruptedly circumboreal range; it occurs in scattered disjunct populations in the higher Central and Southern Appalachians. FNA declined to recognize Fassett's seven varieties, saying the differences were "minute." On the other hand, the species circumboreal range, disjunct into four regions, suggests that enough genetic and evolutionary separation in the isolated populations could exist to produce some infraspecific distinctions. But modern molecular phylogenetic studies of this genus seem to be lacking and we are treating this only at the species level for now.
- Habitat
- Crevices of rocky, high-gradient stream channels and outcrop crevices with periodic seepage, under high-elevation hemlock–northern hardwood forests. Rare, northern Blue Ridge Mountains, on both flanks of Stony Man Mountain in Shenandoah National Park, Page and Madison counties.
