Comments
Map incomplete at this time, and will require extensive herbarium work to firm up. See maps and comments for P. biflorum, sensu lato. and P. biflorum var. biflorum. Var. biflorum is the diploid race and generally smaller and fewer-flowered than tetraploid var. commutatum. The distinction can be problematic, however, as some diploids are fully as large and coarse according to FNA.
Habitat
Well-drained floodplain forests, rich mesic slope forests, low meadows, and road banks; occasionally in dry, shaly woodlands. Widespread in the mountains and Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain; probably in most, if not all, mountain and Piedmont counties but much less common than var. biflorum overall.
Native Status
Native
