- This taxon has been widely lumped into a broad concept of Calystegia sepium, and most Virginia specimens have still not been segregated from other taxa of the C. sepium complex. The current map is therefore very incomplete. However, confirmed records indicate that it is widely distributed in Virginia, and very common in some areas.
The species is recognized by its saccate, overlapping, obtuse bracteoles. The subsp. differs from European ssp. silvatica by its characteristicly square leaf sinus and tendency to produce a pair of flowers at each leaf axil. Flora of the Southeastern U.S. is in the process of transferring all Calystegia spp. back into Convolvulus, in which this species will be given species rank. Several of the combinations have not been formally published, so we are holding off on evaluating and/or following this change until the work is completed. - Habitat
- Open alluvial habitats, field edges, roadsides, weedy clearings, and waste ground more or less statewide. This is the most common bindweed in many areas of Virginia.
