Comments
This shrub, recently found growing in a mature forest in Shenandoah National Park and in northern Virginia and Richmond area urban forests, must be regarded as a rare adventive until proven otherwise. Flora of the Southeastern U.S., Flora of Virginia, and others regard this species as a form of E. fortunei (Turcz.) Hand.-Maz., but this treatment seems dubious given pronounced differences in the growth form (multi-stemmed shrub vs. high-climbing woody vine) and other characters of these taxa.
Habitat
Mesic to wet forests and clearings, especially in urban areas, but also found in a remote mountain forest in Augusta County; at the latter site it has persisted and spread for at least 20 years.
Native Status
Introduced
