In southwest Virginia, Rhododendron catawbiense typically occupies
higher and drier habitats than the widespread R. maximum. However, in the southern part of the Northern Blue Ridge (north of Roanoke), where R. maximum is infrequent to absent, R. catawbiense often replaces it as a dominant shrub in mesic coves and ravines.
Habitat
Dry forests of high sheltered slopes, rocky ridges, and caprock escarpments; also in shrub balds, bogs, and acidic cove forests. In the Piedmont, it is usually restricted to north-facing river bluffs. Common in the southern two-thirds of the mountains, north to Rockingham and Albemarle counties; rare in a few inner Piedmont counties.
