Comments
Map is incomplete at this time, pending the additional herbarium work needed to map the vars. of this species. See comments under the species-level map of Solidago arguta (sensu lato) and S. arguta var. caroliniana. The two vars. appear to be largely sympatric in Virginia and can be difficult to distinguish owing to the extreme variability of both vegetative characters and pubescence on the achenes of var. caroliniana. Only specimens with entirely glabrous achenes should be mapped as var. arguta. Although Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023) treats the vars. at species, we are retaining the traditional varietal treatment here pending further study of the variation in these plants.
Habitat
Mesic to dry upland forests, woodlands, barrens, clearings, and meadows. The species is common in the mountains and infrequent in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain; var. arguta appears to be distributed mostly in the mountains and Piedmont, with a few rare outliers in the Coastal Plain.
Native Status
Native
