Comments
This species is not a true shale barren endemic, also occurring in similarly dry rocky woodlands on substrates other than shale. It's range extends somewhat beyond that of the mid-Appalachian shale barrens. The distinction between this plant and Borodinia serotina, with which it was confused for many years, may be found in Sida 12(2):381-389 (1987). See comment under Borodinia serotina.

Eastern U.S. species of Boechera were transferred to the genus Borodinia by Alexander et al. (2013, Syst. Bot. 38:192-209) based on a relatively close relationship with Asian Borodinia macrophylla. While w. N. American Boechera form a convincing clade, we feel that additional studies are needed to firm up support for the transfer. Inclusion of only a single Asian species and stair-step relationships between a number of genera may belie the best placement of our eastern taxa.
Habitat
In Virginia, known primarily from shale barrens in the Massanutten Mountains (Shenandoah Co.). Also known from a shale barren in Highland Countty, and recently found on a large dolostone outcrop at The Pinnacle, Russell County. Very rare in the Ridge and Valley region of the mountains.
