Vars. palustris and flabellifolia (Pursh) T. & G. are sometimes recognized; FNA says they are distinctive in their extremes but form a morphological continuum.
Habitat
Seepage swamps, seeps, rocky stream banks, calcareous and mafic fens, and bogs; most characteristic of wetlands on mafic and calcareous substrates but tolerates acidic, nutrient-poor soils at high elevations and occasionally elsewhere. Frequent in the mountains; infrequent to rare in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
