- Comments
- First reported from Virginia in Castanea 63:87 (1998). This taxon is often included within Carya ovata as var. australis (Ashe) Little, but several studies have produced evidence of its independent lineage. See Flora of the Southeastern U.S. for more information.
- Habitat
- Dry oak-hickory forests and xeric, stunted, oak-hickory-pine woodlands on hardpan soils weathered from mafic and ultramafic rocks. Rare in the s. Piedmont; known from 3 small portions of Charlotte, Halifax and Pittsylvania counties.
