- Native on dry rocky limestone slopes in extreme SW Va (Cumberland Gap), adventive elsewhere. A short note to this effect may be found in Banisteria 28:53-55 (2006).
According to Flora of the Southeastern U.S., "Lian et al. (2020, Mol. Syst. & Phylog. 148:106825) show that Cocculus as previously circumscribed is polyphyletic, and the two North American species are grouped with an Asian species, in a resurrected genus Nephroia. The newly circumscribed genera are morphologically distinctive as well." - Habitat
- Mesic to dry forests, outcrops, and ruderal habitats. Native on limestone outcrops at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in Lee County. Otherwise, rare as an adventive at scattered sites throughout.
