Flora of the Southeastern U.S. attributes both var. iracunda and var. populnea (Ashe) Kruschke to Virginia. However, we are unable to treat this species at a varietal level because specimens of var. populnea have not been seen, and because even identification to species level can be extremely difficult.
Habitat
Low, open forests of floodplains and mesic slopes; occasionally in drier upland forests. Infrequent throughout.
