- An arborescent shrub or small tree of wooded, alluvial bottomlands predominantly of our southeastern counties. A tuft of tawny hairs in the lower vein axils of otherwise glabrous leaves, can be helpful in identification. Of the five or six often recognized varieties, var. viridis is the only one (of two) in the eastern states that occurs north of South Carolina.
- Habitat
- Well-drained floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, stream banks and riverbanks, and alluvial clearings; occasionally in mesic upland habitats near streams. Common in the inner s. Coastal Plain; infrequent in the c. Coastal Plain and s. Piedmont; rare in the mountains.
