Inexplicably, only three stations (Clarke, Warren, and Rappahannock cos.) for this tree have been found on the Northern Blue Ridge north of Rockfish Gap in Nelson County. Its general absence on the northern section of the Blue Ridge is puzzling since it is common right up to Rockfish Gap, where it abruptly drops out, and also has a continuous distribution to the west in the Ridge and Valley region of nw. Virginia (e.g., on Shenandoah Mountain and Great North Mountain). - Habitat
- Mesic and dry-mesic montane forests, occurring in a wide variety of community types at low to high elevations; occasionally in dry forests and rocky woodlands, especially over calcareous or ultramafic rocks. Common in the southern two-thirds of the mountains; infrequent in the nw. Virginia Ridge and Valley; rare to absent on the Northern Blue Ridge, north of Rockfish Gap; frequent in the far sw. Piedmont, especially the foothills, with an isolated record (Fairfax Co.) in the northern Piedmont.
