- Two putative varieties are not formally recognized here. Var. setigera is supposed to have leaflets lustrous above and sparsely pubescent below while var. tomentosa Torr. & Gray has leaflets dull above and tomentose below. Virginia specimens are relatively pubescent but hardly tomentose.
