- A variable species with a number of infraspecific taxa named. North American plants have been referred to by some authers as var. fortunei (Planch.) Rehder.
- Habitat
- Alluvial forests, seeps, mesic upland forests, old fields, and clearings. Infrequent to locally common in the mountains and Piedmont. This Asiatic species can be highly invasive and aggressive in shaded, moist habitats.
