- Plants with cordlike rhizomes (vs. a stout caudex), leaflets broader than long (vs. longer than wide), and longer achenes (ca. 5 mm vs. 3.5 mm.) are sometimes treated as T. steeleanum, which FNA lumps with T. coriaceum. A Ph.D. dissertation by M.M. Park (Penn State Univ., 1992) found that these characters are variable and occurred together within populations. However, additional study may be warranted.
- Habitat
- Mesic and dry-mesic montane forests, especially common in rich montane oak-hickory forests; rich slope and floodplain forests in the Piedmont; usually in moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the mountains; rare in the Piedmont.
