Wisteria frutescens (L.) Poir.
- Botanical Name
- Wisteria frutescens (L.) Poir.
- Common Name
- American Wisteria
- Wisteria macrostachya (Torr. & A.Gray) B.L. Robins. & Fern.
- This species includes a midwestern variant, Wisteria macrostachya, that is much cultivated in the east and sometimes treated as a separate species. Most records for this species in southeastern Virginia counties probably represent native populations. Other records (definitely Caroline, Goochland, Northumberland, and Shenandoah Cos., and probably Fairfax Co.) represent escapes of the "macrostachya" variant.
- Swamp forests, wet forest borders and fencerows. Rare as a native in the s. and c. Coastal Plain; rare as an escape from cultivation throughout.
