- Traditionally treated as a variety of Solidago rugosa. Sorrie (2018, J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 12: 27-67) demonstrates convincingly that this taxon, with its glabrous stem and leaves, is unlike any other segregate of the Solidago rugosa complex and is in fact much closer morphologically to S. latissimifolia. Elevation to species rank is well justified. Incidentally, Virginia herbarium specimens of S. latissimifolia should be checked using the data in Sorrie's paper, as he notes that many North Carolina specimens of S. aestivalis were misidentified as S. latissimifolia.
The map is likely incomplete at present. Solidago aestivalis is a Coastal Plain endemic ranging from Novia Scotia to South Carolina. It is known in Virginia from a single historical collection, but additional specimens could be misidentified. - Habitat
- "Wet woods" near Langley, City of Hampton. Generally reported to occur in Atlantic white cedar swamps and other wet habitats near the coast. This var. is likely to be restricted to the outer Coastal Plain, where its preferred habitat is located; it should be sought in and around the Great Dismal Swamp.
