Much confused with other species in Virginia, particularly forms of A. purpurea with axillary leaf fascicles. As a result, a number of herbarium specimens are erroneously labelled as this species.
Habitat
Known from a single 1892 collection by A.A. Heller from the "vicinity of Northwest" (City of Chesapeake), the habitat not recorded on the specimen label. Obviously rare, if still extant. Any extant populations are likely to be in sandy habitats of far southeastern Virginia.

Native
