- This Asiatic species has been reported recently as an adventive from several widely scattered Virginia localities. It is a large shrub or small tree reaching 6 or 7 m in height and suckering freely from creeping rootstocks. Although not widely recognized as an invasive species, there are a number of anecdotal accounts on the internet of the species' invasive tendencies. According to BONAP, it has been documented as an escape in ALA, FLA, GA, LA, NC, NY, and PA. Flora of the Southeastern U.S. treats plants of the Southeast as var. ferrugineum Nakai and says they are "strongly naturalized." It remains to be seen whether this tree will become more widely and clearly established in our area.

- Escaped into urban forests and around old home sites. Currently known from Campbell, Hanover, and James City counties.
