The subterranean spikelets ("peanuts") of this grass are distinctive.
Habitat
Boggy power-line clearings and pond shores. Very rare, known from historical sites on the Eastern Shore (Accomack and Northampton counties) and Virginia Beach City, and more recently from a single site in the inner s. Coastal Plain (Greensville County).
