- Var. glabriflorus, with glabrous spikelets and glabrous but often scabrous leaves, is the most widely distributed and common variety of E. glabriflorus in Virginia; the overall spike and lemma dimensions are reported to be slightly larger than in var. australis, but the differences strongly overlap. Map based on herbarium specimens annotated by Julian Campbell; likely incomplete due to the fact that, until recently, E. glabriflorus was subsumed under E. virginicus in most Virginia floristic studies. - Habitat
- Alluvial forests, mesic and dry-mesic upland forests and borders, clearings, fields, dunes, tidal marsh edges, and other moist to dry, shaded or open habitats. Frequent to common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont, rare in the mountains.
