- This taxon has received little recognition in recent decades but is formally treated in Weakley's 2023 Flora of the Southeastern United States. The variety is named for plants of estuarine wetlands that are short, with obtuse to rounded leaves, short pedicels, and usually cleistogamous flowers. It is reported to range from Quebec to eastern Virginia on the Coastal Plain, and is often regarded as the product of environementally induced variation. Since var. inundata has been lumped in almost all Virginia floristic studies since those of Fernald in the 1930's and 1940's, it warrants renewed study in both the field and herbarium.

- Freshwater to slightly oligohaline tidal marshes and sandy or muddy tidal shores; rarely in seasonally flooded, non-tidal wetlands near estuaries. Local, Coastal Plain.
