According to Flora of the Southeastern U.S., this species was originally a Southern and Central Appalachian endemic (AL and GA to PA and MD) but is now more common and widely distributed as a cultivated escape.
Habitat
Known from two collections from montane roadsides, in Rockbridge and Roanoke counties. A rare plant in Virginia. Mapped with "Uncertain" status; on the one hand, the roadside habitats suggest an introduction, but the locations are in remote areas of the National Forest, so native status is possible.
