A little known reference is: Azolla and its occurrence in Virginia, Brit. Fern Gaz. 10:305-309 (1973). 13 records from 9 counties are reported as new at that time. Since then, this species appears to have become more abundant and migrated inland to some extent.
Habitat
Alluvial and tidal swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, depression ponds, interdune ponds, beaver ponds, old mill ponds, other impoundments, and slackwater along river shores. Frequent in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont and mountains, but often numerous in dense colonies where found.
