- All Virginia material is apparently var. virginiana. Adams' mapped var. silicicola (Small) E. Murray north only to the North Carolina Outer Banks (Phytologia 90(3):308 (2008). His analysis in 2010 of Virginia collections thought to be this variety were determined by molecular analysis to be var. virginiana. They lacked the chloroplast marker characteristic of var. silicicola. Herbarium samples were problematic, suggesting var. silicicola. Apparently, the depressed crowns and having the habit of growing on old dunes may be a better aids to identification. Until such plants are found, var. silicicola is not considered part of the Virginia flora.
- Habitat
- Dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, barrens, old fields, fencerows, and sandy soils of the Coastal Plain. Common throughout except at higher elevations in the mountains.
