Comments
G.L. Smith's article, Atrichum cylindricum (Polytrichaceae), an overlooked moss in the southeastern United States (Brittonia 29:368-375 (1977)) is a useful resource. In addition to the illustrations, it also provides a map showing the species' distribution. Although Virginia is at the northern edge of the mid-Atlantic portion of its distribution, the species is probably more frequent than is presently known. Atrichum specimens from swampy or low wet woods would be good candidates.
The name Atrichum oerstedianum (Mexico and southward) has sometimes been misapplied and Virginia specimens could be referrable to this or several other species.
Robert Ireland's Taxonomic studies on the genus Atrichum in North America (Can. J. Bot. 47(3):353-368 (1969)), is also very useful but applies the name A. oerstedianum in a different sense.

Low, wet woods, stream banks and wet ditches
