- This species was generally lumped with Carex amphibola in older Virginia floristic studies, and its distribution is incompletely documented at present. Mapped records contributed by R.F.C. Naczi, 2005, as well as additional specimens from various herbaria.
- Habitat
- Well-drained floodplain forests, hummocks of alluvial swamps, mesic to dry-mesic upland forests, old fields, meadows, and clearings; usually in base-rich soils. Based on field and herbarium experience, Carex grisea appears to be frequent in the mountains (low elevations) and Piedmont, at least in the northern two-thirds of the state; infrequent to rare in the inner Coastal Plain.
