 - Dry-mesic to dry upland forests, Piedmont hardpan forests, sandy or rocky woodlands, barrens, and dry clearings; occurs in both extremely acidic and strongly basic soils. Frequent to common over most of the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; locally frequent in the mountains at low elevations on acidic substrates.
