- Sandhill woodlands, dry rocky woodlands over mafic rock, xeric hardpan forests, and dry slopes of shell-marl ravines. Notable for its occurrence on both strongly nutrient-poor and strongly base-rich substrates; exceptionally tolerant among ericads of high soil calcium and magnesium. Infrequent in the s. Coastal Plain (locally common in sandhill areas); rare in the outer s. Piedmont; mostly south of the James River.
