- Alternately wet and dry hardpan forests and woodlands, flatwoods depressions, and clearings over mafic rock in the Piedmont; mafic fens, ultramafic woodlands and barrens in the Southern Blue Ridge. Infrequent in the outer s. Piedmont; rare in mountains (Grayson County).
