- Although FNA does not recognize subspecies of Paronychia baldwinii, the treatment here does. According to FNA, Chaudhri (1968, A revision of the Paronychiinae. Drukkerij H. Gianotten N.V., Tilburg. 440 pp.) used duration and pubescence to recognize two subspecies of this taxon (ssp. riparia with us), but Shinners (1962, Sida 1: 101-103) found that these characters varied independently. Nevertheless, the variable pubescence seems of trivial importance compared to differences in flowers, sepals, styles, and fruit that do correlate with an annual/perennial difference, according to Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023).

- Dry sandhill woodlands, sandy clearings and roadsides. Infrequent, s. Coastal Plain, south of the James River; may be locally common in favorable sandhill habitats.
