- Shallow water and moss hummocks of forested, often rocky or gravelly seeps and seepage swamps. Frequent in the mountains and n. Piedmont; infrequent in the s. Piedmont and n. Coastal Plain; rare in the s. Coastal Plain; in the eastern part of the state, it is more restricted to habitats with calcareous soils.
