Comments
A unique, red-fruited phenotype is reported from the Chickahominy River in New Kent County by Nuphar specialist Donald J. Padgett in Castanea 61(4):391-392 (1996). Vouchers with additional color photographs are deposited at NHA, GH, MO, and VPI. The field research was supported, in part, by the Barbara J. Harvill Botanical Research Fund administered by the Virginia Botanical Associates.
Habitat
Tidal freshwater marshes and mud flats, natural sinkhole and depression ponds, interdune ponds, calcareous marshes and muck fens, sluggish streams, floodplain pools, and impoundments. Frequent to common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; more local in the Ridge and Valley region of the mountains.
