- Nomenclature follows Ballard, H.E., J.T. Kartesz, and M. Nishino. 2023. A taxonomic treatment of the Violets (Violaceae) of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. Jour. Torrey Bot. Soc. 150(1): 3-266. Some violet experts include this species in Viola septemloba Le Conte or V. palmata L. Virginia herbarium specimens need critical re-evaluation due to possible confusion of various Coastal Plain lobed-leaf violets.

- Floodplain forests and alluvial swamp hummocks. S: Infrequent in the s. and c. Coastal Plain, north to Middlesex County.
