- On tree trunks, especially of smooth-barked trees such as American beech (Fagus grandifolia), red maple (Acer rubrum), and American hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana); less commonly on acidic rocks. Collections of this species are somewhat scattered state-wide, but it may be under-collected and appears to be common in some areas.
