Comments
Arundinaria appalachiana is a Southern Appalachian endemic ranging south in the Appalachians and Piedmont foothills to Georgia and Alabama. A 2023 collection by Milo Pyne represents the first record in Virginia and a slight northward range extension from populations in North Carolina. The species may also occur in southern West Virginia, but needs verification. Hill cane is a short (usually < one meter tall) species that usually occurs in extensive stands in dry-mesic to dry hardwood forests at lower and middle elevations.
Habitat
Along a forest-bordered ramp off I-77 near Lambsburg, Patrick County. It should be sought elsewhere in the far southern Virginia Blue Ridge region.
