This is the currently accepted name for plants referred to in FNA as S. montana and distributed in various states in the West and in British Columbia in Canada. Worldwide, it is also known from Europe and c. Asia. In the East specimens determined as S. rupicola from Maine and Pennsylvania may be the same. In Virginia, it was found in 2025 during exploration of shale barren habitats in the Massanutten Mountains.
Habitat
The single small population comes from small exposures of shale bedrock in a wide open, limey barren.
