Comments
Native to southeastern Europe and Asia Minor; widely cultivated as an ornamental in North America. Discovered in Virginia by Jennifer Stanley in 2025. Not known elsewhere in the eastern states, but well established as a sometimes invasive weed in the western U.S. and Great Lakes region. This spurge is listed as a noxious weed in several states, and is illegal to cultivate in Oregon and parts of Utah. Its sap is a serious skin and eye irritant and can even cause blindness under some circumstances.
Habitat
Apparently established in a young calcareous woodland over dolostone near Blacksburg. There are several other iNaturalist reports of it in the general vicinity.
