- Newly described in Phytotaxa 739 (3), 2026. This species most closely resembles Monarda clinopodia in our area, but differs in its earlier flowering period, shorter stature and fewer nodes, shorter petioles, generally denser pubescence, longer calyx lobes, smaller lower corolla lip with less purple spotting, and corolla generally more creamy-white or greenish white than the pure white of clinopodia. It shares some of these features with M. bradburiana, a species only documented as far eastward as central Tennessee. Possible hybrids with M. clinopodia are known from near Douthat State Park, but the two taxa have not been found to co-occur. The purported hybrids flower later, have intermediate morphology, and are more prone to powdery mildew infection than M. reedii.
- Habitat
- Woodlands, forest edges, and openings on calcareous shales in lower slope positions. In Highland Co, found at limestone woods edge which may indicate broader habitat affinities.
